In Minnesota, drunk driving comes with the possibility of steep penalties if convicted. One man is facing more than seven years behind bars after he was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated and causing an accident that left two with fatal injuries. The accident report indicates that his blood alcohol content was over twice the legal limit at the time of the crash, and he was driving at excessive rates of speed as well.

Details of a plea deal

The prison sentence is part of a plea deal the man accepted last month. The original charges against him included four counts of criminal vehicular homicide and two counts of third-degree murder. In the deal with the prosecution, he pleaded guilty to the criminal vehicular homicide charges.

Drunk driving cases involving accidents that result in harm to another person can result in steep penalties. In this case, the defendant found that accepting a plea deal was the most practical way forward for his individual situation. Depending on the details of the specific case, a plea deal may offer a defendant the best opportunity to protect his or her future interests.

The right defense

There is no cookie-cutter defense strategy when facing drunk driving charges. A Minnesota defendant will find it beneficial to seek the counsel of an experienced defense attorney to identify the most appropriate way forward. Whether it is in court or through a plea deal, everyone has the right to seek the best outcome to his or her drunk driving case.
