In a vast state like Minnesota that experiences harsh weather, losing your license can hurt your independence and financial well-being. Losing driving privileges severely limits your ability to provide for yourself and your family.
But overcoming this financial strain by regaining your license can also cost you, especially if you face enhanced charges and penalties for driving while impaired (DWI).
When does a license get canceled and denied?
License revocation is one of the potential administrative sanctions, along with vehicle plate impoundment and vehicle forfeiture, that drivers face immediately after a DWI arrest.
Even when motorists secure a license with a no-alcohol/drug restriction, the state informs them they could lose it if they commit any violations at any time.
The Minnesota Department of Public Safety also cancels and denies a license if the driver:
- Has three or more DWIs in 10 years
- Has four incidents on their record
While people with suspended driving privileges want to get their licenses back as soon as possible, they may have limited opportunities to do so for an extended period.
When can a canceled license get reinstated?
A canceled license is only eligible for reinstatement if the driver has completed rehabilitation. This process includes:
- Following chemical use assessment recommendations
- Completing chemical dependency treatment
- Meeting other requirements, such as obtaining insurance and paying fees
- Validating, via an ignition interlock device, total abstinence from alcohol and drugs
Fulfilling these requirements can take years. Removing the “no alcohol/drugs” restriction can take even longer.
How much can reinstatement cost?
Before getting their license back, a driver must apply for a new one and pay fees, which generally include:
- $250 driver’s license reinstatement fee
- $430 reinstatement surcharge
- $26.25 driver’s license application fee
In Minnesota, some drivers may pay the reinstatement fee and surcharge in two installments. However, the Department of Public Safety charges a handling fee for the installment plan. They can only regain driving privileges once they pay the full amount.
Getting your license back can be a challenging process. Consulting an experienced DWI defense attorney is advisable. They can help ensure you meet the legal requirements and avoid excessive fees.
